This one-of-a-kind small group safari features an exceptional Bushman Guide team from The Wild Source, as you visit an iconic location where African wild dogs have been featured in 2023 films by BBC (Planet Earth 3) and Disney Nature (Animals Up Close).
Historically this area of the Okavango Delta has 2 to 3 different African wild dog packs den each year. We have timed this safari to maximize the opportunities to view painted dogs (African wild dogs) family lives as they raise their puppies. The puppies usually emerge from their den in the first half of July, and then remain at the den site through late August. Occasionally packs den early with puppies emerging in May or June, in that case we may have packs with puppies of different ages including some newly mobile pups which adds to the interesting observation opportunities. Dens can fail, and if one of the alpha parents passes away they can miss a denning cycle so no guarantees, but with 2 to 3 packs a year the chances of viewing wild dog family life is quite high for this safari.
This is a prime wildlife area, and the thriving presence of the wild dogs is an indicator of the great health in this region. Overall wildlife viewing is stellar, and our teams dedication to the ancient art of tracking ensures the best opportunities for finding the full range of predators. Leopard are particularly excellent in this area. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and stunning sable antelope are common in the area. Night drives can also be quite productive, and often less sighted mid-size carnivores are located such as civet, honey badger, and African wildcat. Off-road driving is allowed, leading to thrilling adventures as we track predators and try to follow them on their hunts!
We utilize an authentic mobile camp, the ultimate for safari purists. Here the experience is in dining under the stars while sharing stories around the fire, learning of Bushman culture through the oral tradition, and being connected to the bush and wildlife at all times. You will have a nice level of comfort but never forget your special surrounds!
