African Wild Dogs at Kwando Camps - July Update

Monday, 6 July 2009 23:42 by BillGiven

The following is the latest update from the Kwando Guides on the African Wild Dog activity at their various Botswana safari camps.

Recent wild dog sightings at Kwando properties continue to amaze even the most experienced of African travelers, and offer the best opportunities for visitors to view these incredible animals!

Nxai Pan Camp

The resident pack of ten dogs at Nxai Pan Camp has been sighted regularly as they move through their range which includes the western edge of the pan and the camp. The young members of the pack delight in chasing after the abundant jackals found under seemingly every bush on the pan! We are eager to learn more about this pack and will update you as spend more time observing them.

Tau Pan Camp

Guests were thrilled to come across the region’s pack of ten dogs, within seconds of leaving Tau Pan Camp. Minutes later the pack discovered a honey badger on his morning rounds. The inquisitive dogs just couldn’t resist the chance to have some fun. In keeping with his reputation, the badger listed as the most fearless animal on earth, decided he was having none of it! The badger produces a highly offensive secretion from its anal glands, much like a skunk. This foul odour and some fairly lively charges at the dogs persuaded the pack this little bundle was more trouble than it was worth. The dogs were last seen disappearing over the next rise while the badger continued on his untroubled way!

Kwando Lagoon Camp

We are very proud to announce that the Lagoon pack alpha female has once more denned! We have keeping a watchful eye on her up to now and she disappeared about a week ago. We would therefore expect to see the little ones out and about by mid-August assuming no natural disasters or overly interested lions. Watch this space for more information on the Kwando Lagoon Camp Wild Dogs!

Kwando Kwara Camp

A once in a lifetime sighting at Kwando Kwara Camp several weeks ago left guests and guides speechless. A female cheetah and her five cubs were spotted feeding on a recently killed impala. Several minutes later as the guests sat quietly observing the cheetah, a young kudu appeared no more than fifty metres away pursued by a pack of six wild dogs. The kudu was quickly pulled down by the alpha male who called to the rest of the pack to join him. Shortly after a much larger pack of fifteen dogs, no doubt attracted by the calls of the alpha male, arrived at speed and instantly attacked one of the smaller pack members. In less than two minutes and literally within metres of the vehicles the fifteen dogs literally pulled the individual to pieces!
