December to March: Kimondo Camp is located in Kusini, the open plains of the Southern Serengeti, during the calving season. Along with the herds there are many cheetah, lion and spotted hyena that make their living from the migration at this time of year. Set in a natural amphitheatre with outstanding views of a permanent water hole, Kimondo’s Kusini home is an idyllic one. Superb game viewing can be had on the daily game excursions, or simply enjoyed from the private terrace of your safari tent. There are only three tented camps set in the Kusini area so it is a less visited corner of the Serengeti and off road driving is allowed in Kusini. It is also easy to game drive to the stunning Moru Kopjes and other rich areas of the Central Serengeti from this base.
July to November: Kimondo Camp is setup in the Lamai Wedge, the portion of the Serengeti north of the Mara River up to the border with Kenya’s Masai Mara. Here lies an enormous swath of short grass plains that teems with animals and supports large numbers of the great migration herds. Amazingly this magical slice of Africa has just a couple of camps making this the Serengeti’s most exclusive game viewing area. Nowhere else in the Serengeti/Mara Ecosystem can you be in such a prime location and have it all to yourself. This is particularly advantageous to seek out the herds crossing the Mara River to witness one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles without line ups of other vehicles. Typically from late July through October there are frequent crossings of the river. The vast open plains of the wedge are very enticing for the various grazers making this ideal cheetah habitat as well.
Kimondo Camp is a luxury seasonal tented camp that is very intimate with just 8 guest tents. Tents contain large beds, wide private verandas, ensuite bathroom facilities with bucket showers and flush loos. A stay in Kimondo Camp is not about 5 star luxury though. It’s about something more than that. Being in the middle of this incredible wilderness, with wild animals roaming around camp at night, is a dream come true to even the most experienced of travelers.
